Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on the government to actively protect and strengthen opposition voices, arguing that a vibrant opposition is essential for democracy to thrive.

Speaking during a public engagement, Obi stressed that democratic systems function best when dissenting voices are not only tolerated but encouraged. “The government should ensure the protection of the opposition; in fact, they should make the opposition stronger,” he said.

His remarks come amid growing concerns over political tensions and allegations of intimidation targeting opposition figures in Nigeria. Analysts say such developments risk weakening democratic institutions in Africa’s most populous country.

Obi, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics, warned that suppressing alternative viewpoints could erode public trust in governance. He emphasized that strong opposition parties play a critical role in holding governments accountable, improving policy decisions, and offering citizens credible alternatives.

Political observers note that Obi’s comments reflect a broader debate about the state of democracy in Nigeria, where electoral disputes, security challenges, and economic pressures have heightened political sensitivities.

“Democracy is not a one-party system,” Obi added. “It is strengthened by competition, transparency, and accountability.”

Government officials have yet to respond directly to Obi’s statement, but previous remarks from authorities have emphasized their commitment to maintaining law and order while upholding democratic principles.

As Nigeria continues to navigate its political and economic challenges, calls for inclusivity and institutional reforms are likely to remain at the center of national discourse.
