Gusau — Seven members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly announced their resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the floor of the House during plenary today, in a move that could alter the balance of power in the 24-member legislature.

The lawmakers named in the resignation are:

• Hon. Faruk Musa Dosara
• Hon. Ibrahim Tukur
• Hon. Muktar Nasir
• Hon. Bashir Masama
• Hon. Aliya Kagara
• Hon. Bashar Aliyu
• Hon. Bashir Bello

They represent the constituencies of Mafara South, Maradun One, Bakura, Bukkuyum North, Gummi One, Bungudu North, and Maru North. Some reports, however, say eight lawmakers have left the APC, listing Kaura among affected constituencies; the identity of a possible eighth defector has not been confirmed at press time.

Sources at the Assembly said the defectors are expected to formally declare their new political affiliation in the coming days. Initial accounts indicated they were set to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while other informants suggested the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — which currently holds sway in parts of the state — may be their destination. There has been no official statement from the defectors confirming either party.

The departures come amid heightened political realignments in Zamfara ahead of the 2027 general elections and follow a series of defections and counter-defections in the state’s political landscape. With the Assembly composed of 24 members, the loss of seven (or possibly eight) APC lawmakers could significantly affect legislative majorities and the ability of party leadership to pass measures without new alliances.

Leaders of the Zamfara APC had not issued an official response as of press time. Efforts to reach the Assembly leadership and the named lawmakers for comment were ongoing.

More details will follow as parties and the Assembly provide official confirmations.
