Ademola Lookman’s dream switch to Inter Milan is facing fresh uncertainty, as the Italian giants draw a hard line in negotiations with Atalanta over the Nigerian forward’s transfer fee.

The Serie A runners-up have made it clear they will not raise their €40 million bid for the Super Eagles star, despite Atalanta’s firm €50 million valuation. Sources close to the club say Inter have now issued a final deadline, warning that they will turn their attention elsewhere if no agreement is reached soon.

“Inter Milan are desperate to sign Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman, but they’re not willing to wait forever,” Tuttosport reported. The publication described the deal as “hanging by a thread” even after Inter secured personal terms with the player.

Lookman, 27, is understood to have agreed to a multi-year deal worth €4 million per season. He is currently recovering from a minor injury, and Inter were initially confident of sealing the deal quickly. But Atalanta’s refusal to budge on their asking price has slowed negotiations to a crawl.

Despite the standoff, Lookman remains committed to the move. “He’s made it clear that Inter is his priority,” a source familiar with the discussions told The Punch. “He turned down strong offers from Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and even Napoli to focus on this move.”

Napoli, now under the leadership of Antonio Conte, reportedly proposed a swap deal involving Italian striker Giacomo Raspadori, but Lookman declined. Barcelona also showed interest but were constrained by La Liga’s financial regulations.

Lookman’s rise in Italy has been impressive. Since joining Atalanta from RB Leipzig in 2022, he has consistently delivered on the pitch, netting crucial goals in both domestic and European fixtures. His performances during the 2023/24 season, including a UEFA Europa League final brace, have only heightened his value and visibility.

Football analyst Seyi Ibitoye told The Journal, “Lookman has developed into one of Nigeria’s most complete forwards. His technical ability, tactical intelligence, and European experience make him a perfect fit for a club like Inter.”

Atalanta, however, are playing hardball. The Bergamo-based club is reportedly exploring replacements, with Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee and other targets under consideration. They have also sanctioned the departure of Matteo Retegui, who recently joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Qadsiah.

Inter are keeping their options open, but their interest in Lookman remains strong  provided Atalanta lower their demands before the window closes.

If the deal collapses, it could mark one of the summer’s most talked-about near-misses in the Italian transfer market, particularly as Lookman’s stock continues to rise on and off the pitch.
