The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have issued a two-week ultimatum to the Zamfara State Government to address anomalies in the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage or face a total shutdown of the state.
The unions warned that failure to act could lead to mass industrial action. They also demanded the immediate reinstatement of civil servants who were unlawfully dismissed.
The state NLC Chairperson Comrade Sani Halliru Kuryar and TUC Chairman Sa’idu Mudi described the wage implementation as disappointing, adding that it is a violation of the agreement between labour and the government.
They further warned that they will not hesitate to embark on industrial action if the government fails to address these issues within the given timeframe.
The ultimatum underscores growing tensions between organised labour and the state government over workers’ rights and welfare.
President Bola Tinubu signed the N70,000 minimum wage into law earlier this year following negotiations with labour unions. The policy aims to improve workers’ livelihoods amid rising inflation and economic hardship.
However, implementation has faced resistance and inconsistencies in several states, leading to disputes between governments and labour unions across the country.
