Amid escalating security concerns in Kogi West, the Senator representing the district, Sunday Karimi, has reaffirmed his commitment to the safety of his constituents during a courtesy visit to the Commander of the Nigerian Army’s 12th Brigade, Brigadier General Kasim Umar Sidi.
During the meeting held at the Chari Maigumeri Barracks in Lokoja on Wednesday, Senator Karimi lauded the Brigade’s dedication to neutralizing terrorist networks and restoring peace to the region. He specifically praised the professionalism of the troops in their ongoing battle against banditry and kidnapping.
“We recognize the difficult terrain you navigate. Your commitment to securing our forests and protecting our communities is invaluable,” Karimi stated. He also used the occasion to commiserate with the Commander over the loss of soldiers who died in the line of duty, describing their sacrifice as a debt that will not be forgotten.
While acknowledging the military’s successes, the lawmaker urged the command to intensify efforts to rescue victims still being held captive by kidnappers.
In response, Brigadier General Sidi thanked the Senator for his consistent support. He announced that fresh troops would be deployed to high-risk areas within the senatorial district, specifically mentioning Olle (Kabba-Bunu LGA), Isanlu, Jege, and Idofin (Yagba East), as well as Odo-Ere and Egbe (Yagba West).
In recognition of the Senator’s proactive role in the state’s security architecture, the Brigade Commander presented him with a commemorative plaque.
Addressing journalists after the visit, Senator Karimi revealed that he has already secured accommodation for the troops earmarked for deployment to Jege and Idofin.
“The military has assured us of immediate deployment. To facilitate this, I have provided accommodation in those areas,” Karimi said. He further pledged to fund the construction of a new residential bungalow within the barracks to improve the living conditions of the troops, with construction expected to begin shortly.
Senator Karimi has a documented history of military support. In October 2024, he commissioned and handed over a 96-bed, fully equipped Military Forward Operating Base (FOB) and two brand-new Hilux vans in Egbe. The facility serves as a strategic hub for operations along the border corridors of Kogi, Kwara, Ekiti, and Osun States.
