The 2023 governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Alhaji Yakubu Murtala Ajaka, popularly known as “Muri,” has formally apologized to his former principal and former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.
In a statement titled *”A Call for Peace, Unity, and Progress of Our Dear State,”* released on Sunday, May 4, 2026, Ajaka described the move as a necessary step toward healing the deep political divisions that have characterized the state since the contentious November 2023 gubernatorial election.
Ajaka, who served as a close ally to Bello before their high-profile fallout prior to the 2023 polls, stated that the intense friction of that period was never personal but was driven by “the circumstances of the time.”
The statement, which marks a significant shift in Ajaka’s political posture, explicitly seeks forgiveness for any offense caused during the heat of the electoral struggle.
“In the overriding interest of peace, unity, and the progress of our dear state, I believe it is both necessary and honourable to rise above the past,” the statement read. “I extend a hand of understanding and goodwill, and where my actions or words may have caused offence, I PROFOUNDLY APOLOGIZE in the spirit of reconciliation.”
He added that he has “chosen to let go of all grievances and move forward with a clear heart, without reservation.”
Reflecting on the 2023 election cycle, which was marred by violence and legal battles, Ajaka paid tribute to his supporters, particularly those who lost their lives.
“I must pause in solemn remembrance of our gallant supporters who lost their lives in the course of that struggle. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten,” Ajaka said, noting that their memory should guide the state toward a more peaceful future.
**A Shift in Focus**
The apology is seen by political analysts as a strategic move to stabilize the political atmosphere in Kogi East and the state at large as the 2027 election cycle begins to take shape. Ajaka emphasized that no personal ambition is worth the instability of the state.
“Our focus must now shift from division to unity, collaboration, and from the past to the future; we must build together. I remain committed to the shared goal of a stronger, more prosperous Kogi State,” he concluded.
As of the time of this report, the camp of the former Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has yet to issue an official response to the public apology.
