Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, has formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), delivering a major political boost to the ruling party in the North-East.

The defection ceremony, held on Wednesday in Jalingo, drew the full weight of the APC leadership, led by the party’s National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda. Vice President Kashim Shettima, APC governors, National Assembly leaders and key party stakeholders were also present to welcome the governor into the party.

In his remarks, Prof. Yilwatda described Governor Kefas’ decision as a “significant milestone” for the APC, noting that it reflected growing confidence in the party’s leadership and policy direction at both national and subnational levels.

Vice President Shettima hailed the defection as a strategic gain for the APC, saying it underscored the party’s commitment to inclusive governance, national unity and development-driven politics. He assured Taraba residents that the federal government would continue to partner with the state to deliver meaningful progress.

Governor Kefas, in his address, said his decision followed wide consultations with political allies and stakeholders across Taraba State. He stated that his move was guided by the need to align the state more closely with the federal government in order to accelerate development and improve the welfare of the people.

The APC governors and National Assembly leaders present pledged their support to the Taraba governor, describing his defection as a welcome development that would strengthen the party’s foothold in the state and the wider region.

Governor Kefas’ switch further reshapes Taraba’s political landscape and adds to a growing list of high-profile defections to the APC ahead of future electoral contests.
