Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso on Thursday held separate visits to major markets across Kano metropolis, in what many observers view as an early test of political influence in the state.

Governor Yusuf toured Sabon Gari and Singer markets, where he was received by traders and residents, pledging renewed commitment to infrastructure development, security and support for small businesses. Addressing market leaders, Yusuf said his administration would continue to prioritise grassroots engagement and economic revival.

“We are determined to rebuild Kano and restore confidence among traders and investors,” the governor said, promising improved access to credit and better market facilities.

Meanwhile, Kwankwaso, the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), paid a separate visit to Kantin Kwari market, drawing a large crowd of supporters. The former governor, who played a key role in Yusuf’s emergence as governor, used the occasion to reaffirm his political relevance and called on residents to remain united in pursuing development for the state.

Both visits, held just hours apart, attracted significant attention on social media, with supporters from both camps sharing images and videos from the markets.

Political analysts say the parallel tours underline shifting dynamics within Kano’s political landscape, as key figures seek to consolidate support ahead of future electoral contests.

Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states, and public appearances by its top political actors are closely watched as indicators of grassroots strength.
