Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has formally resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), citing deepening internal disputes and protracted legal battles that he says now threaten the party’s cohesion at both state and national levels.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the governor said his decision followed extensive consultations with political associates and stakeholders across Kano State, stressing that the persistent crises within the NNPP had made it increasingly difficult to provide stable and focused leadership.

Governor Yusuf lamented that unresolved factional struggles and court cases within the party had weakened its internal structures, distracted elected officials from governance, and created uncertainty about the NNPP’s future as a viable political platform.

According to him, the situation had degenerated to a point where it posed serious risks to democratic stability within the party, with rival claims to leadership and conflicting legal actions undermining unity nationwide.

“The continued internal disputes and legal challenges have unfortunately eroded the collective vision and cohesion required to effectively serve the people,” the governor said, adding that his resignation was taken in the best interest of Kano State and his political supporters.

Yusuf, who was elected on the NNPP platform in the 2023 general election, did not immediately disclose his next political move, but sources close to the governor indicated that consultations were ongoing with leaders of other major political parties.

His exit marks a significant blow to the NNPP, particularly in Kano State, where the party recorded one of its strongest electoral performances, and is expected to further reshape the political landscape ahead of future elections.
