Nigeria’s House of Representatives has resolved to commence debate on the 2026 Appropriation Bill today, signalling the start of legislative scrutiny of the Federal Government’s spending plans for the coming fiscal year.
Lawmakers said the debate would prioritise allocations to critical sectors of the economy, with a view to ensuring that public spending aligns with national development goals and delivers tangible benefits to citizens.
The leadership of the House stressed the importance of a thorough and transparent review process, noting that the budget remains one of the most powerful tools for driving economic growth, infrastructure development and social welfare. Members are expected to examine proposed funding for sectors such as health, education, security, agriculture and infrastructure.
Several legislators also underscored the need for realistic revenue projections and prudent deficit management, amid ongoing economic pressures and the need to stabilise public finances. They maintained that careful consideration would be given to projects capable of stimulating jobs, investment and productivity.
The debate marks a key stage in the budget cycle, as the National Assembly is constitutionally empowered to review, amend and approve the appropriation framework before passage. Observers say the tone and direction of discussions in the coming days could shape fiscal priorities and policy implementation in 2026.
Deliberations on the bill are expected to continue in the days ahead, with committees likely to invite ministries, departments and agencies to defend their proposed expenditures.
