Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday held a private meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in a development that has fuelled fresh political speculation ahead of the 2027 general election.
Details of the closed-door meeting were not immediately disclosed, and neither the Presidency nor Jonathan’s camp issued an official statement on the discussions.
The meeting, however, came just hours after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) published the personal particulars of presidential and National Assembly candidates for the 2027 elections.
Notably absent from the list was Jonathan, whose anticipated return to the presidential race under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) failed to materialise following INEC’s continued recognition of the faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The electoral body has yet to recognise the rival PDP bloc led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, a development that effectively shut out candidates presented by that faction from the published list.
Jonathan’s meeting with President Tinubu has therefore drawn significant public and political interest, with analysts suggesting it comes at a critical moment in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
While the purpose of the engagement remains unknown, the timing has intensified discussions over the former president’s political future and the deepening leadership crisis within the PDP as preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace.
