Authorities in the United Kingdom Crown Dependency of Jersey have announced plans to return $9.5m in funds linked to Nigeria’s former military ruler, Sani Abacha, to the Nigerian government for use in infrastructure development.

The decision follows long-running international efforts to recover assets traced to Abacha, who ruled Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998 and whose regime was widely accused of large-scale corruption.

According to officials, the funds were identified as part of proceeds illicitly diverted from Nigeria and later held in Jersey. Their repatriation is expected to be carried out under strict conditions to ensure transparency and proper utilisation.

Nigerian authorities have indicated that the recovered money will be channelled into key infrastructure projects aimed at improving public services and economic development across the country.

The return of the funds adds to billions of dollars previously recovered from Abacha-linked accounts in Switzerland, the United States and other jurisdictions over the past two decades. International partners have increasingly tied such recoveries to monitoring frameworks designed to prevent mismanagement and ensure public benefit.

The development underscores renewed cooperation between Nigeria and international authorities in efforts to trace, recover and repurpose assets linked to past corruption.
