The Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) has issued a stern warning to former United States President Donald Trump following his recent remarks suggesting possible military intervention in Nigeria over alleged genocide claims.
In a statement circulated on its propaganda channels, the terror group described Trump’s comments as “an empty threat” and vowed to resist any foreign interference in what it called its “religious struggle.” ISWAP accused the West of hypocrisy, claiming that the United States and its allies “pretend to defend humanity while spreading destruction across the world.”
Trump had earlier condemned reports of killings and alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, warning that such acts “would not go unpunished” if he returned to office. His comments, which have sparked intense debate across diplomatic and political circles, were seen as a direct message to Nigerian authorities and militant groups operating in the country’s northeast.
Security analysts have warned that the militant group’s reaction could heighten tensions in the region, where ISWAP and Boko Haram have continued to launch deadly attacks despite ongoing counterterrorism efforts by the Nigerian military and its regional allies.
The Nigerian government has yet to respond officially to Trump’s remarks or ISWAP’s warning, but officials privately dismissed the group’s statement as “a sign of desperation.”
Defence sources reaffirmed that Nigeria remains committed to combating terrorism within its borders and would continue working with international partners to ensure peace and stability across the Lake Chad Basin.
