The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled 19 September 2026 for by-elections to fill five vacant legislative seats across four states.
The elections will be held in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states, following vacancies created in the affected legislative constituencies.
INEC said the polls are part of efforts to ensure that constituencies without elected representatives are given the opportunity to choose new lawmakers.
The affected seats cut across the National and state legislative assemblies, with eligible voters expected to participate in the elections on the scheduled date.
The commission is expected to release further details on the constituencies, candidates, polling arrangements and other logistical preparations as the election date approaches.
INEC has also urged political parties, candidates and other stakeholders to comply with electoral guidelines and conduct their activities peacefully throughout the process.
The 19 September polls will be closely watched as another test of the commission’s preparations for conducting credible elections and ensuring that voters in the affected constituencies are able to exercise their constitutional right to choose their representatives.
