Indonesia emerged as the standout nation at the 8th Lagos International Badminton Classics, concluded at the Okoya Thomas Indoor Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium. The tournament’s finale witnessed Indonesia clinching three gold medals, showcasing skill and determination across several categories.
The grand final day opened with a commanding Mixed Doubles victory from Indonesian pair Prasetyo and Munggaren, who defeated India’s Ravat and Maneesha in straight sets, 21-15, 21-17. In the Men’s Singles final, Indonesia’s Pradiska Shujiwo overcame Japan’s Minoru Koga 21-15, 21-17 in a gripping match that raised his world ranking and highlighted his emergence as a rising star.
India maintained prominence in the Women’s Singles category with defending champion Shreya Lele retaining her title after beating compatriot Aakarshi Kashyap 21-15, 21-17. The Indonesian dominance was reinforced in the Women’s Doubles final, where Meida and Nastine secured a swift 21-18, 21-7 win over UAE’s Quathun and Sreejithparol.
The Men’s Doubles crown went to the Russian-origin neutral team of Alimov and Ogloblin who defeated UAE’s Ravikrishna and Rimdahoi 21-15, 21-12, ending UAE’s bid for gold.
Nigeria’s presence was felt with Sofiat Arinola Obanisola and her partner clinching bronze in the Women’s Doubles, offering a proud moment for the host nation amid tough international competition.
Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, praised the event’s success, stating, “The Lagos International Badminton Classics has once again proven Nigeria’s readiness to host world-class sporting events and showcase Africa’s talent and passion for badminton.”
