In the latest development following the tragic stampede at a Christmas funfair in Ibadan, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Naomi Silekunola, along with Oriyomi Hamzat of Agidigbo FM and Abdullahi Fasasi of Islamic High School, have been remanded in custody at the Agodi Correctional Centre. The incident, which resulted in the loss of 35 children’s lives and left six others injured, has led to a four-count charge being brought against the defendants.
During their arraignment in Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi’s court in Iyaganku, Ibadan, heavy security was present as the order for remand was issued. The charges are said to contravene Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000, with the prosecution alleging their involvement in the events leading to the tragic stampede.
The court has decided to keep the defendants in custody pending legal advice from the Oyo State Director of Public Prosecutions. The high-profile proceedings attracted significant public attention, with law enforcement officers closely monitoring the suspects during their time in court.
More details are expected to emerge as the case progresses.
