The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has pledged to govern with integrity, discipline and a strong sense of purpose should he emerge as the state’s next governor in 2027.

Hamzat’s declaration comes shortly after he received a public endorsement from the incumbent governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, a move that has further intensified political conversations around succession in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

In a message posted on his X account, Hamzat described the endorsement as a significant vote of confidence, saying it reflects years of working closely in the administration of Lagos State.

“Today, I am honoured by the endorsement of my Governor, my brother and my friend, HE Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” he wrote. “His trust means a great deal to me. We’ve worked side by side in the service of Lagos State, and I don’t take this vote of confidence lightly.”

Sanwo-Olu, who currently leads the state government, has not formally declared support for any successor in a party-wide process, but his remarks are widely seen as politically significant ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.

Hamzat, who has served as deputy governor since 2019, positioned his statement as a commitment to continuity and service, while signalling readiness for higher responsibility within the state’s political structure.
