The Presidency has formally apologized after mistakenly including two prominent living Nigerians, Pa Reuben Fasoranti and Dr. Edwin Madunagu, in the Posthumous Honours category during President Bola Tinubu’s Democracy Day speech at the National Assembly.
The error, which garnered immediate public attention and sparked confusion, occurred during the President’s televised address on Thursday, where he recognized numerous pro-democracy activists and national figures for their invaluable contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey.
In a statement released a few hours later by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the government acknowledged the mistake and indicated that efforts were underway to rectify the error across all State House platforms.
“Under the Posthumous Award category, the names of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the esteemed leader of Afenifere, and Dr. Edwin Madunagu were incorrectly included. Both distinguished individuals are very much alive and, therefore, should not have appeared in the posthumous category,” Onanuga stated.
He characterized the oversight as an unfortunate error and reassured Nigerians that the necessary updates would be implemented to accurately reflect the status of the honourees.
“We sincerely regret this oversight and any confusion it may have caused. We are committed to making the necessary corrections across all State House digital platforms to ensure that accurate information is disseminated,” the statement emphasized.
The incident highlights the importance of accuracy in public communications, especially during significant national events. The government’s swift acknowledgment of the error and commitment to rectification reflects a desire for transparency and accountability in its operations.
As the nation continues to celebrate its democratic milestones, the Presidency’s prompt response aims to maintain the integrity of the honours system and uphold the dignity of all individuals recognized for their contributions to Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
