Tension gripped the House of Representatives on Thursday as opposition lawmakers refused to allow legislative proceedings to continue, insisting that Hon. Fred Agbedi of Bayelsa State must first be recognised as the Minority Leader.
The standoff comes as lawmakers prepare to deliberate and vote on a series of constitutional amendment bills, including the closely watched proposal to establish state police across Nigeria.
Opposition members maintained that no legislative business should proceed until the leadership dispute is resolved, effectively halting activities on one of the National Assembly’s most significant constitutional sessions.
The impasse has cast uncertainty over the fate and timing of the constitutional amendment process, with lawmakers expected to negotiate a resolution before proceedings can resume.
