The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the deadly February 3 terrorist attack in Kwara State, which claimed the lives of about 75 people and left scores displaced after homes were set ablaze.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, council members described the assault as “heinous and cowardly”, expressing their deepest sympathies and condolences to the bereaved families, as well as to the government and people of Nigeria.
The council also extended its wishes for a swift and full recovery to those injured in the attack and called for the immediate and safe return of individuals reportedly abducted during the violence.
Reaffirming its stance against extremism, the Security Council stressed that terrorism, in all its forms and manifestations, remains one of the gravest threats to international peace and security.
Members urged Nigerian authorities to bring the perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of the attack to justice, while emphasising the need for accountability through lawful and transparent means.
The council further called on all nations to strengthen cooperation with Nigeria, in line with international law and relevant UN resolutions, to combat terrorism and violent extremism.
The latest condemnation adds to growing international concern over persistent insecurity in parts of Nigeria, as communities continue to grapple with the devastating human and material toll of armed attacks.
