Unidentified gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen, launched a terrifying attack on commuters along the perilous Oweto-Apa-Adoka-Otukpo road in Benue State. The incident occurred on Friday evening in an area between Asaba and Olojo.
Reports indicate that several truck drivers and other travelers, both from Otukpo to Oweto and vice versa, were kidnapped during the onslaught, with some victims tragically losing their lives.
An eyewitness, a commercial motorcyclist (popularly known as an Okada rider), recounted a harrowing scene where he witnessed the murder of a fellow rider who was transporting a casket. The victim’s motorcycle and the casket were left abandoned on the road, surrounded by other deserted trucks.
John Ikwulono, a former chairman of the Apa Local Government Area in Benue State, confirmed the attack to DAILY POST, stating that the total number of casualties remains unknown. “Aside from the individual killed by the roadside, we currently cannot ascertain the number of casualties. The gunfire was sporadic, likely aimed at those attempting to flee,” he said.
As of now, efforts to contact Catherine Anene, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police, have been unsuccessful, as she did not respond to calls made for comments.
