A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has urged Nigerians to broaden their focus on accountability, extending it beyond President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to include all levels of government. Mumuni emphasized the critical need to scrutinize state and local representatives, arguing that their roles are equally vital to national development.
Mumuni highlighted that while it’s essential to hold President Tinubu accountable for his policies and decisions, a more comprehensive approach to good governance requires citizens to engage actively with their governors, senators, and other elected officials. He pointed out that many Nigerians often overlook the significant responsibilities of state governors, members of the National Assembly, and other local government office holders.
In a statement released on Friday, the APC chieftain underscored the pivotal roles played by governors and legislators in policy formulation, execution, and implementation. “While it is crucial to hold our President accountable for his policies and decisions, I urge all Nigerians to also direct scrutiny towards the leaders who serve at the state and local levels,” Mumuni stated. “Governors and legislators play a pivotal role in shaping the well-being of our communities, and it is essential for us to thoroughly examine their performance and commitment to their constituents.”
Mumuni further asserted that each level of government has distinct duties and responsibilities, and it is incumbent upon citizens to demand equal accountability from all elected officials. He encouraged Nigerians to ask specific questions about governance in their respective states, such as the measures implemented by their governors to improve healthcare, education, and infrastructure. “By holding our state leaders accountable, we can create a more comprehensive and constructive narrative about our nation’s governance,” he added. “It is only through collective scrutiny of all levels of leadership that we can pave the way for genuine progress and development.”
