Germany has taken a major step to secure the international future of Eintracht Frankfurt defender Nnamdi Collins, locking him into their senior national team for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The 21-year-old centre-back, born in Düsseldorf and of Nigerian descent, has been called up by Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann for the matches against Slovakia and Northern Ireland in September.
“Nnamdi Collins played well at the U21 European Championship. He really established himself in Frankfurt last year and played a lot of minutes. He has very good physical attributes, is really fast, and plays a bit more defensively in Frankfurt than he did in the U21 national team,” Nagelsmann said, praising Collins’ versatility and promising style of play.
By making his senior debut in the qualifiers, Collins would be cap-tied to Germany under FIFA rules, cementing his international allegiance and ending any chance of representing Nigeria, his country of descent. Collins has made 34 youth appearances for Germany, embodying his commitment to Die Mannschaft despite ongoing interest from the Nigeria Football Federation.
The defender’s background includes time at Borussia Dortmund’s academy before signing a five-year deal with Eintracht Frankfurt. His rise comes amid a competitive tug-of-war for dual-national talents, where Germany has secured notable talents like Kevin Schade and Jamal Musiala, while Nigeria has also retained players such as Leon Balogun.
