Iran is set to hold a state funeral for its slain top security official, as authorities promise retaliation following his killing in a wave of air strikes blamed on Israel.
The death of senior figure Ali Larijani marks one of the most significant blows to Iran’s leadership since the escalation of conflict with Israel and its allies. Iranian officials say the funeral will be held with full state honours, reflecting his status within the country’s political and security establishment.
Iranian state media reported that Larijani was killed in a targeted strike in the capital, Tehran, alongside close aides and security personnel. The attack forms part of a broader campaign that has seen several high-ranking Iranian figures eliminated in recent weeks. 
Vow of retaliation
Iranian authorities have responded with strong rhetoric, warning that the killing will not go unanswered.
Military officials described the assassination as a “crime” and pledged a “decisive and regrettable” response, signalling a potential escalation in hostilities across the region. The government has repeatedly accused Israel of orchestrating the strikes as part of an ongoing war targeting Iran’s leadership structure.
The killing has intensified tensions already heightened by weeks of conflict, with both sides exchanging attacks and threats.
National mourning and symbolism
Funeral ceremonies for senior Iranian officials typically draw massive crowds and serve as both mourning events and political statements. Previous processions in Tehran have seen thousands take to the streets, chanting slogans against perceived دشمنان (enemies) of the state.
Analysts say the upcoming funeral is likely to reinforce domestic unity while projecting defiance internationally, as Iran positions the slain official as a martyr.
Escalating regional crisis
Larijani’s death underscores the deepening crisis in the Middle East, where targeted killings of senior figures have become a defining feature of the conflict. His role in shaping Iran’s security and political strategy makes his loss particularly significant. 
With Tehran vowing revenge and Israel maintaining pressure through continued strikes, fears are growing that the confrontation could spiral into a wider regional war.
