The 153rd edition of The Open Championship tees off this week at the historic Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland, and all eyes are on golf’s elite as they battle for the prestigious Claret Jug. With Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy leading the global rankings, expectations are sky-high for another electrifying major showdown.
McIlroy, fresh from securing his career Grand Slam at The Masters, is aiming to match Sir Nick Faldo’s six-major record. “He’s coming into the championship on the back of a runner-up finish at the Genesis Scottish Open and is showing strong signs of form,” Sky Sports’ Jamie Weir observed. Scheffler, on the other hand, boasts ten consecutive top-10 finishes globally in 2025 and seeks to secure his third major, having already clinched the PGA Championship.
Xander Schauffele, last year’s champion, is looking to break an eleven-year streak where no golfer has won The Open back-to-back. “We’ll see if that trend continues or if Schauffele sets a new record,” Weir added.
While McIlroy and Scheffler dominate the headlines, England’s Tommy Fleetwood has emerged as a serious contender. The 34-year-old, who was runner-up the last time The Open was held at Portrush in 2019, has been receiving a wave of support from pundits.
Rich Beem confidently stated, “He finished runner-up here in 2019 and is playing some pretty exceptional golf right now. It’s his time.” Nick Dougherty echoed the sentiment: “He’s playing fantastic golf and might just be flying under the radar. He shouldn’t be – he’s a great talent.” Wayne Riley added, “He loves links golf and it has to happen soon, so why not here?”
Pundits offered a range of predictions for this year’s champion. While Dame Laura Davies, Inci Mehmet, Iona Stephen, and Sarah Stirk have all backed McIlroy, others like Wayne Riley, Nick Dougherty, and Richard Boxall are tipping Fleetwood for glory. Tim Barter is placing his faith in Schauffele, while Andrew Coltart believes Jon Rahm could lift the jug.
Outside the favourites, several potential dark horses have been identified. Nicolai Hojgaard, Sepp Straka, Dan Brown, and Sergio Garcia have all impressed analysts with their recent form. “Dan Brown won two weeks ago and was 10th at The Open last year. At 175/1, he’s a real underdog to watch,” said Wayne Riley. Rich Beem believes Garcia is “playing darn well right now and has got all the shots.”
David Howell suggested that Tyrrell Hatton and Bob MacIntyre are nearing major breakthroughs, noting, “They’re in the peak of their careers. Bob will certainly win an Open at some stage – he reminds me of Harrington.”
Other names attracting buzz include Marco Penge, Cameron Young, Justin Rose, Ryan Fox, and Matt Fitzpatrick, all tipped for breakout performances. “I like Justin Rose this week,” Sarah Stirk said. “Just because of the experience, skill, guile and class he has at an Open Championship. He has a good chance of producing something special again.”
