the Federal Government has approved a N142 billion investment to construct state-of-the-art bus terminals across the country’s six geopolitical zones. The decision, finalized during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, marks a historic intervention in road infrastructure beyond traditional road construction.
Transportation Minister Sai’du Alkali, addressing journalists post-FEC, revealed that the terminals will be strategically located in Abeokuta (South-West), Gombe (North-East), Kano (North-West), Lokoja (North-Central), Onitsha (South-East), and Ewu, Edo State (South-South). “These locations were selected for their economic viability,” Alkali stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing critical gaps in Nigeria’s transport system.
The initiative tackles long-standing challenges, including the absence of proper bus terminals, which has fueled crime, road accidents, and the proliferation of arms on highways. “This is the first time the government is directly intervening to enhance commuter safety and efficiency through such infrastructure,” Alkali noted.
Additionally, the FEC issued a directive to all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies handling 2024 Appropriation contracts to complete procurement processes by September 2025, ensuring timely project execution.
