The Director-General of the controversial Presidential Council on Societal Development and Youth Empowerment, Adeyemi, has written to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for the immediate constitution of an independent investigative panel to probe allegations surrounding an alleged ₦1.3 billion budget scandal.
In the petition, Adeyemi urged the President to establish a credible and transparent inquiry comprising respected anti-corruption institutions, civil society organisations and representatives of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), insisting that only an impartial investigation can restore public confidence and establish the true facts surrounding the controversy.
The request comes amid mounting scrutiny over the activities and legitimacy of the council, which has been widely described by critics as a “fake” presidential body following questions about its legal status, official recognition and funding.
Adeyemi maintained that the allegations have generated widespread public concern and risk undermining confidence in government institutions if left unresolved. He argued that an independent panel would ensure accountability, transparency and due process while preventing the issue from being influenced by political interests.
According to the petition, the proposed committee should be empowered to examine the council’s financial records, investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged ₦1.3 billion budget, identify any individuals found culpable and recommend appropriate legal or administrative action where necessary.
The development adds another chapter to the growing public debate over transparency and accountability in the management of public funds, with observers insisting that a thorough investigation is essential to protect the integrity of public institutions and reinforce confidence in Nigeria’s anti-corruption framework.
The Presidency is yet to publicly respond to Adeyemi’s request for an independent probe
