The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to introduce a biometric facial recognition system, known as V-Pass, across the country’s domestic airports as part of a sweeping effort to strengthen aviation security, modernise passenger processing and deliver a more seamless travel experience.
The authority disclosed the development on Thursday via its official X account, describing the initiative as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s drive towards a smarter, technology-driven aviation sector.
According to FAAN, the V-Pass platform will allow travellers to verify their identities using facial recognition technology following a one-time enrolment process. Once registered, passengers will be able to move through designated airport checkpoints without repeatedly presenting physical identification documents, significantly reducing processing time while improving efficiency.
The authority said the biometric solution is designed to simplify passenger verification, minimise delays and enhance the accuracy of identity checks, while also reinforcing security protocols across airport terminals.
FAAN noted that the introduction of V-Pass aligns with global best practices in aviation, where airports are increasingly adopting digital identity and biometric technologies to improve operational efficiency and strengthen border and passenger security.
The agency added that the system is expected to ease congestion at airport terminals, reduce dependence on manual documentation and provide a faster, more convenient experience for domestic travellers.
The rollout forms part of FAAN’s broader digital transformation agenda aimed at modernising airport operations, improving service delivery and positioning Nigeria’s aviation industry to meet evolving international standards.
While the authority has yet to announce a commencement date or specify the airports where the first phase of implementation will begin, it assured passengers that additional details on the rollout would be communicated in due course.
The planned deployment marks one of the most significant technological upgrades to Nigeria’s domestic aviation infrastructure in recent years, reflecting the government’s continued push to leverage innovation in enhancing security, efficiency and passenger confidence across the country’s airports.
