Andy Burnham has officially been declared leader of Britain’s governing Labour Party, clearing the final hurdle before taking office as the United Kingdom’s 59th Prime Minister on Monday. He will succeed Keir Starmer, who announced his resignation following mounting political pressure and Labour’s poor performance in recent local elections.

The former Mayor of Greater Manchester emerged unopposed in the Labour leadership contest after securing overwhelming backing from party lawmakers. In his first speech as leader, Burnham pledged to restore public confidence, unite the country, decentralize power, and focus on economic renewal, public services, and regional development as he prepares to move into 10 Downing Street.
