Former member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to reopen allegations of financial crimes involving Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Agbonayinma made the request through his lawyer, Hannibal Uwaifo of Sagitarian Law Firm, in a petition to the anti-graft agency.

The former lawmaker is asking the EFCC to investigate and prosecute Atiku over alleged financial crimes he claims were committed during Atiku’s tenure as vice-president.

According to the petition, the commission has been given 14 days to act on the request.

The demand comes as Atiku, a former vice-president and long-standing opposition figure, prepares for the 2027 presidential election under the ADC.

Agbonayinma’s request centres on allegations relating to Atiku’s time in office, although the former vice-president has previously denied allegations of corruption and financial misconduct levelled against him.

The EFCC has yet to publicly respond to the latest request.

Atiku served as vice-president from 1999 to 2007 under former President Olusegun Obasanjo and has remained a prominent figure in Nigerian opposition politics.

The allegations contained in the petition have not been established in court, and any prosecution would require the EFCC to conduct its own investigation and present evidence capable of sustaining criminal charges.
