The former Students’ Union Government president of Akwa Ibom State University reportedly died after receiving medication at an orientation camp in Enugu State.

The death of a former student leader at a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp has sparked calls for an investigation into allegations of fake medication and delayed medical attention.

Etimbuk Daniel, the immediate past president of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at Akwa Ibom State University, reportedly died at the NYSC orientation camp in Enugu State.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) confirmed his death in a statement issued by its president, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, on Sunday.

According to the statement, Daniel had complained of a headache while participating in the orientation exercise and was given medication by medical personnel at the camp.

However, his condition reportedly deteriorated after taking the drugs, prompting him to request that he be transferred to a hospital for further treatment.

NANS alleged that approval for the transfer was delayed and that Daniel died before he could be taken to a hospital.

The association also claimed it had received information that a doctor subsequently identified the medication administered to him as fake.

The allegation has not been independently verified, and the precise medical cause of Daniel’s death remains unclear.

NANS demands investigation

Reacting to the incident, Afeez described Daniel’s death as a painful loss to the Nigerian student community and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

He said the allegations involving the medication and the reported delay in obtaining hospital treatment were deeply troubling and required urgent attention.

The NANS president also highlighted the dangers posed by counterfeit medicines, calling for stronger measures to protect the lives of young Nigerians.

The association extended its condolences to Daniel’s family, friends, former colleagues and the entire Akwa Ibom State University community.

It added that further actions and its official position on the incident would be communicated in due course.

Questions over medical care at NYSC camp

Daniel’s death has raised concerns about the availability of safe medication and access to emergency medical care at NYSC orientation camps.

The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the authenticity of the drugs allegedly administered to him and the reported delay in arranging his transfer to a hospital, require clarification from the relevant authorities.

As of the latest reports, no detailed official response from the NYSC addressing the allegations had been identified.

An investigation would be needed to establish the sequence of events leading to Daniel’s death, determine whether any lapses occurred and establish whether the medication he received played a role.

His death has left members of the student community mourning the loss of a former student leader, while calls grow for transparency and accountability over the incident.
