The Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to assemble a team of experts to assess the health of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is facing a seven-count terrorism charge.
Delivering the ruling on Friday, Justice James Omotosho ordered that the medical team’s report be submitted within eight days to aid the court’s decision on Kanu’s request to be transferred to the National Hospital, Abuja, for specialist care.
The court mandated the team to inspect the Department of State Services (DSS) medical facility to determine whether it can adequately meet Kanu’s health needs.
Justice Omotosho further held that the NMA panel, to comprise eight to ten members including a cardiologist and a neurologist, is free to consult any hospital in the country during its assessment.
The Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Abuja, must also serve on the committee, the court ruled.
