President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has declared that the National Assembly is deeply pained by the recurring violence and loss of lives in Plateau State, insisting that “we cry over every killing”. He made the remarks in Jos on Sunday during a condolence visit to communities recently affected by attacks.
Addressing traditional leaders, community representatives, and state officials, Akpabio described the persistent insecurity in Plateau as “a national tragedy that must not be allowed to continue”. He emphasised that the Senate is committed to supporting lasting solutions, including improved security coordination and greater investment in peacebuilding.
Akpabio stated that the stories of families torn apart by violence had left members of the National Assembly shaken. “Every life lost diminishes us as a nation,” he said. “We feel the pain, and we will not stand idly by while innocent Nigerians are killed.”
He further assured residents that the legislature would work closely with the executive arm to strengthen intelligence gathering, accelerate security reforms, and ensure that perpetrators of violence are brought to justice.
Community leaders expressed hope that the Senate’s intervention would signal a turning point, urging the government to prioritise early-warning systems, youth engagement, and economic support to reduce tensions.
Akpabio’s visit comes amid growing calls for urgent action to stem the cycle of violence in Plateau, a state long troubled by ethno-religious and communal conflicts.
