Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has publicly urged the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), describing the move as “the right thing to do.”

Speaking at the Nigerian Bar Association’s Annual General Conference in Enugu, Mbah revealed that his very first meeting with President Bola Tinubu centred on Kanu’s detention.

“My first visit to the President was about Nnamdi Kanu. I believe that the right thing to do is to release him. Hopefully, that will be done soon,” the governor stated during a question-and-answer session.

Highlighting progress in regional stability, Mbah emphasised that the frequent Monday sit-at-home orders, previously linked to Kanu’s incarceration, have ended in Enugu State.

“We met a situation where people were compelled to stay at home every Monday. Now, people trade peacefully in Ogbete and other markets on Mondays,” he explained, crediting his administration’s efforts toward restoring normalcy.

On the developmental front, Governor Mbah also discussed strategies his government employs to remove barriers and attract opportunities that bolster the state’s growth.

Nnamdi Kanu remains on trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja over terrorism allegations, which he denies.
