Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima has declared that President Bola Tinubu has no credible rival ahead of the 2027 general elections, downplaying the role of social media in determining electoral outcomes.
Speaking at a public event on Saturday, Shettima said political contests in Nigeria are decided by grassroots mobilisation and governance record, not online popularity.
“Elections are not won on social media,” he said, adding that Tinubu’s administration remains firmly positioned politically despite criticism and opposition voices online. “As of today, the president has no rival.”
The remarks come amid growing political manoeuvring across Nigeria as opposition parties seek to regroup following Tinubu’s contested victory in the 2023 presidential election. Economic hardship, rising inflation and insecurity have fuelled criticism of the government, much of it amplified on digital platforms.
Shettima’s comments appear aimed at countering narratives driven by online activism and signalling confidence within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as it looks ahead to the next election cycle.
Supporters of the president argue that ongoing economic reforms — including subsidy removal and fiscal restructuring — will ultimately strengthen Tinubu’s standing with voters, even as they acknowledge the short-term pain many Nigerians are experiencing.
Opposition figures, however, reject claims that Tinubu is politically unchallenged, pointing to widespread public dissatisfaction and accusing the government of being disconnected from everyday realities.
Political analysts say the vice president’s statement reflects a broader strategy by the ruling party to frame political legitimacy around traditional structures, party machinery and incumbency power rather than digital engagement.
With more than two years to the 2027 polls, Nigeria’s political landscape remains fluid — but the presidency has made clear it sees no immediate threat on the horizon.
