United States President Donald Trump has described the military campaign dubbed “Operation Epic Fury” against Iran as “one of the largest, most complex and most overwhelming military offensives the world has ever seen”, as he claimed that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is dead.

In a televised address on Monday night, Trump declared the operation a decisive show of American strength, asserting that the offensive had dismantled key elements of Iran’s military infrastructure.

“Iran’s formerly supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei is dead,” Trump said. “This wretched and vile man had the blood of hundreds, and even thousands, of Americans on his hands and was responsible for the slaughter of countless thousands of innocent people across many countries.”

The president did not immediately provide evidence to substantiate the claim regarding Khamenei’s death. Iranian authorities have yet to confirm or respond publicly to the statement.

Escalating tensions

The announcement marks a dramatic escalation in already fraught relations between Washington and Tehran. Analysts warn that confirmation of the Iranian leader’s death could have far-reaching implications for regional stability, with fears of retaliation by Iranian forces or allied armed groups.

Pentagon officials described “Operation Epic Fury” as a coordinated, multi-domain campaign involving air, naval and cyber capabilities. However, specific operational details were not disclosed, citing national security concerns.

Global reaction

International leaders have called for restraint amid concerns that the situation could spiral into a broader regional conflict. The United Nations urged all parties to exercise caution and prioritise diplomatic channels.

Markets reacted sharply in early trading, with oil prices surging on fears of disruption to supply routes in the Gulf region.

If confirmed, the death of Khamenei — who has led Iran since 1989 — would mark a turning point in the country’s modern history and could trigger a complex succession process within Iran’s political and religious establishment.

As developments unfold, observers say the coming days will be critical in determining whether the confrontation remains contained or expands into a wider conflict with global ramifications.
