Former Senator Dino Melaye has been summoned to appear in court at Wuse Zone II on September 5 over allegations of owing N509 million in unpaid personal income tax. The FCT Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) alleges that Melaye, known for his high-profile lifestyle, underpaid taxes for multiple years, including 2020, 2021, and 2022.
Records indicate that despite declaring substantial incomes—over N6.5 million in 2022 alone—Melaye paid as little as N85,000 in 2019 and only N1 million in 2022. The FCT-IRS issued an administrative assessment for the years 2023 and 2024, amounting to over N509 million in total tax liabilities. After Melaye reportedly failed to respond to the assessment within the prescribed 30-day period, a ‘best of judgment’ notice was served on June 23, 2025.
The tax authority’s move signals a crackdown on high-profile tax defaulters and underscores Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to improve tax compliance across all sectors. The former senator has yet to publicly respond to the allegations ahead of his court date next month.
