Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has praised the Armed Forces for their swift and decisive response during last Sunday’s attempted coup in the Republic of Benin, saying their timely intervention was instrumental in frustrating the plot.
Speaking on Tuesday, Gen. Musa commended the professionalism and alertness displayed by Nigerian troops operating under regional security frameworks in West Africa. He noted that their rapid mobilisation and intelligence support significantly strengthened efforts to restore stability in the neighbouring country.
According to the Defence Minister, Nigeria’s close security cooperation with Benin and other ECOWAS member states enabled the quick exchange of crucial information, which helped regional authorities to act before the situation escalated.
Gen. Musa stressed that Nigeria remains committed to safeguarding democratic governance across West Africa, adding that any attempt to undermine constitutional order within the region will be met with firm, collective resistance.
He further lauded the collaboration between military and intelligence agencies, stating that their seamless coordination once again demonstrated Nigeria’s leadership role in regional peacekeeping and crisis management.
The Defence Minister reiterated that Nigeria will continue to work with ECOWAS to strengthen early-warning systems, enhance joint operations and prevent future threats to democracy in the sub-region.
