Afrobeats star David Adeleke, better known as Davido, pulled a massive crowd on Monday night as he headlined a sold-out concert at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland, United States.
The show, part of his ongoing 5IVE Alive Tour, marked his first performance at the 19,000-capacity venue. Fans turned out in large numbers, singing along to hits like Fall, If, FEM, and Unavailable.
Social media buzzed with excitement, as clips of the crowd chanting lyrics word-for-word spread across platforms.
“The crowd singing Davido’s verse on With You word for word at Merriweather,” one fan posted on X (formerly Twitter), using the tour hashtag #5IVEAliveTour.
Another user, @Successful1o1, claimed: “Davido did that. First African artist to grace and sell out Merriweather Post Pavilion. A night to remember.”
Though the “first African to sell out” claim remains unverified, the concert was widely praised as another major moment for Afrobeats on the global stage. Davido, who has already surpassed 9 billion streams globally, continues to break barriers.
Not everyone was impressed, though. Some users cast doubts on the show’s turnout. @Beckkyyy55 posted: “9b stream but 20k people no fit buy their ticket.” Another user joked: “Dem go soon say this place na 20k capacity jus now.”
Despite the scepticism, loyal fans were quick to defend him. One Facebook user, Val Pedro, wrote: “The man after the people’s heart. We love you forever.” Another fan, Muhammadu Idrisu, added: “The one and only 001.”
On Instagram, @Emmy_Dmw44 encouraged the artist to go even bigger: “Make Davido start dey make preparation for stadium concert. Opps must cry.”
