Nigeria’s Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC) has accused the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) of failing to submit its audited financial statements since 2019, describing the omission as a violation of the Fiscal Responsibility Act.
The commission said the prolonged failure to file the mandatory financial reports undermines transparency, accountability and sound public financial management, as required by law.
Under the Fiscal Responsibility Act, all government ministries, departments and agencies are required to prepare and submit their audited financial statements annually to ensure proper oversight of public funds and strengthen fiscal discipline.
The FRC said the Nigeria Customs Service has not complied with the statutory requirement for five consecutive years, raising concerns over adherence to financial reporting obligations by one of the country’s key revenue-generating agencies.
The commission stressed that compliance with the law is not optional and urged the Customs Service to immediately submit its outstanding audited financial statements to avoid further breaches of the Act.
The development comes amid renewed efforts by the federal government to improve transparency, strengthen public finance management and enforce accountability across government institutions.
