The cost of filling a 5kg cooking gas cylinder jumped to N8,081.75 in October 2025, up 26.36% from N6,395.82 in September, the National Bureau of Statistics has reported. Year-on-year, the price rose 16.86% from N6,915.69 in October 2024.
The NBS Cooking Gas Price Watch for October, released on December 11, 2025, pinned the surge on the PENGASSAN strike at Dangote Refinery in September and ongoing maintenance at Nigeria LNG Train 4. Prices shot from N1,100 per kg to N1,800 per kg in many outlets right after the industrial action kicked off.
State-by-state, Borno topped the list at N8,376.44 for 5kg, followed by Yobe (N8,357.98) and Ondo (N8,340.30). Bauchi had the lowest at N7,051.54, with Ebonyi (N7,744.99) and Akwa Ibom (N7,806.31) next. By zone, North-West led at N8,188.55, North-Central at N8,153.21, while South-South was cheapest at N7,956.61.
For 12.5kg cylinders, the average refill hit N18,636.77 in October—15.36% higher than September’s N16,155.09 and 11.37% above October 2024’s N16,734.55. Borno again paid most at N19,391.57, Yobe N19,339.51, Ondo N19,289.65. Ebonyi was lowest at N17,610.88, followed by Akwa Ibom and Anambra at N17,783.79 each. North-East topped zones at N18,953.86, North-West N18,861.70, with South-South at N18,207.65.
Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo had earlier linked the September spike to the refinery strike and NLNG downtime. The October NBS figures show prices stayed high even after partial resolution.
