On Friday, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), led Nigerian Army officers and personnel in special prayers honoring the late former COAS, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away on November 5, 2024.
Speaking after the Jumat prayer service held in Abuja, Shaibu praised Lagbaja as a patriotic and selfless leader who made significant contributions to Nigeria’s defense and security landscape.
He explained that the remembrance activities, including services at both church and mosque, were organized to pay tribute to Lagbaja and other fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives in service to the nation.
“Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja played a vital role in defending our nation. It has been one year since his passing, and it is only right that we honor his memory,” Shaibu said.
“His legacy reflects selfless service and exceptional leadership. He led us admirably, and I urge all officers and soldiers to uphold those values.”
The Army chief also called on Nigerians to support the Armed Forces through prayers and active dedication to national security.
He prayed for God’s continued comfort and strength for Lagbaja’s family as well as the families of other fallen heroes.
“All nations rely on their military for defense; therefore, it is essential we support our armed forces with prayers and cooperation to secure our great country,” he added.
The Jumat service was attended by former COAS, retired Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, and senior officers from various branches of the military.
The memorial observances for the late Lagbaja will continue with an interdenominational church service on Sunday, along with community outreach programs.
