Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has accused ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo of deliberately making allegations against him to promote the political ambition of his kinsman ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking during an interview, Atiku claimed that the allegations levelled against him were politically motivated rather than based on facts, insisting they were part of a broader effort to shape the political landscape in favour of Obasanjo’s preferred candidate.
According to the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, the timing and nature of the accusations suggest they were intended to undermine his political standing as conversations around the 2027 presidential race continue to gather momentum.
“Obasanjo created allegations against me to favour his kinsman in 2027,” Atiku said, alleging that the former president was using his influence to advance a regional political agenda.
The former vice-president did not provide evidence to substantiate the claim during the interview, while Obasanjo has yet to publicly respond to the allegation.
The remarks add a fresh twist to the long-standing political rivalry between the two leaders, whose relationship has experienced periods of cooperation and public disagreement since they served together in government between 1999 and 2007.
Political analysts say the exchange could further intensify early manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 elections, as leading political figures continue to position themselves and their allies for what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.
There has been no official reaction from Obasanjo’s camp at the time of filing this report.
