The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been plunged into fresh uncertainty as internal disputes and regulatory intervention have forced at least six of its state chapters to suspend planned congresses and key party activities.

The disruption follows the recent decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw recognition from certain factional leaderships within the party. This move has intensified an already simmering leadership crisis, leaving several state structures in disarray and unable to proceed with scheduled organisational processes.

Party officials in the affected states confirmed that congresses—intended to strengthen grassroots mobilisation and prepare for upcoming political engagements—have been put on hold indefinitely. The suspensions are widely seen as a precautionary measure, aimed at avoiding further complications amid the ongoing legal and administrative uncertainties.

Adding to the turmoil, conflicting court orders have deepened confusion within the party. While some rulings appear to validate specific factions, others challenge their legitimacy, creating a complex legal landscape that has made it difficult for state chapters to determine which leadership to follow.

Insiders suggest that the dual pressures of INEC’s derecognition and the judicial tussles have effectively paralysed decision-making within the ADC. In several states, party members are said to be divided along factional lines, with loyalties split between rival leadership camps.

Political analysts warn that if the situation is not swiftly resolved, the ADC risks weakening its organisational cohesion at a critical time. The inability to conduct congresses not only delays internal restructuring but may also hinder the party’s readiness for future elections.

Efforts to reconcile the warring factions are reportedly ongoing, though progress appears slow. For now, the party remains caught in a web of legal disputes and regulatory challenges, with its immediate future hanging in the balance.
