The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Vows to Maintain Supply of Pristine Naira Notes and Calls for Public Respect of the Currency
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has renewed its commitment to ensuring the Nigerian economy is supplied with adequate, clean, and properly mixed currency notes.
This pledge was delivered by Mrs. Hakama Ali, the Acting Director of the Corporate Communications Department at the CBN, during the bank’s Special Day event at the 20th Abuja International Trade Fair (AITF) on Thursday.
Beyond its role in monetary management, the CBN is actively urging Nigerians to become custodians of the national currency. Mrs. Ali stressed that while the bank will continue its efforts to maintain clean currency availability, citizens must also recognize the Naira as a crucial symbol of national identity. She implored the public to “respect it and keep it clean,” strictly discouraging practices such as currency spraying, hawking, mutilation, and counterfeiting, and rallying stakeholders with the slogan, “Our Naira, Our Pride.”
Focus on Economic Resilience and Growth
Addressing broader economic challenges, Ali noted that the CBN’s leadership is focused on boosting productivity and fortifying the local economy against external shocks. She outlined a three-pronged approach for achieving economic sustainability: fostering strong financial systems, maintaining a stable foreign exchange market for effective planning, and ensuring robust collaboration between monetary and fiscal authorities.
Evidence of these efforts, she reported, includes a significant surge in the nation’s external reserves, which climbed to $43.05 billion as of September 11, 2025, up from $40.51 billion at the end of July 2025.
In the banking sector, the CBN maintains that the system is resilient and robust. The Bank also provided an update on the recapitalization exercise, confirming that 14 banks have successfully met the new requirements, with the remaining institutions under close monitoring to ensure a successful conclusion of the process.
Furthermore, the CBN plans to continue its leadership in payment system innovation through its ambitious Payments System Vision 2028, a roadmap designed to broaden financial inclusion in rural areas, enhance security, and facilitate faster, more efficient transactions.
Stakeholder Praise
The CBN’s commitment was echoed by the business community. Mr. Agaidu Jideani, Director-General of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), lauded the apex bank not just as a regulator, but as a “vital enabler of growth.” He highlighted the CBN’s essential role in stabilizing inflation, ensuring confidence in the financial system, and providing opportunities for businesses, particularly Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), through access to credit and specialized intervention funds.
