Burkina Faso has released 11 Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel following sustained diplomatic engagement between both countries, sources have confirmed.
The officers, who had been held by Burkinabe authorities under circumstances that were not officially disclosed, were freed after behind-the-scenes negotiations involving senior diplomatic and security officials. The development marks a significant breakthrough in bilateral relations and security cooperation between Abuja and Ouagadougou.
Credible sources disclosed that Nigeria’s diplomatic channels, working closely with regional partners, played a central role in securing the release of the personnel. The engagement is said to have involved assurances at the highest levels, underscoring the importance both countries place on regional stability and military collaboration.
Although neither the Nigerian Air Force nor the Burkinabe government has issued a detailed public statement on the matter, it was confirmed that the released personnel are in good condition and are expected to return to Nigeria shortly.
The incident had raised concerns within defence and diplomatic circles, given ongoing regional efforts to combat terrorism and transnational crime across West Africa. Analysts say the peaceful resolution highlights the effectiveness of dialogue in addressing sensitive security issues among neighbouring states.
More details are expected to emerge as official statements are released by the relevant authorities.
