Former President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerian leaders to prioritize the welfare of citizens over personal gain, stating that he left office with the same physical assets he possessed before his presidency.
Speaking to a delegation of All Progressives Congress (APC) governors at his Kaduna residence, Buhari emphasized the importance of a citizen-centric approach to governance. He described leadership as a balance between challenges and opportunities, stressing that this balance is key to national advancement.
Buhari expressed confidence in the progress of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and reiterated his call for unwavering commitment to national development. He also thanked President Bola Tinubu’s administration for renovating his Kaduna home, noting that while the exterior remained unchanged, the interior saw significant improvements.
“I left office with the same physical assets I had before my presidency,” Buhari stated, underscoring his commitment to integrity in public service.
The former president acknowledged his past collaboration with some of the visiting governors and welcomed the new ones.
Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, Chairman of the PGF, explained that the visit was to extend Eid-el-Fitr greetings and express gratitude for Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s democracy and the APC.
“Many of us recall with pride the principled role you played in the founding of the APC. That legacy continues to shape our party’s identity and direction,” Uzodinma said. He also highlighted Buhari’s public endorsement of the APC and President Tinubu as a “powerful symbol of continuity and humility.”
Uzodinma praised Buhari’s administration for its focus on security, economic recovery, and anti-corruption, citing achievements such as reclaiming territory from insurgents, expanding social investment programs, and initiating infrastructure projects.
“Your efforts reclaimed territory from insurgents, extended social investment programs like the Conditional Cash Transfer and School Feeding Program, and ushered in a road and rail revolution that is still bearing fruit,” Uzodinma said.
He also acknowledged Buhari’s efforts in promoting food security through programs like the Anchor Borrowers Scheme.
“You taught us to produce what we eat and eat what we produce. You brought dignity to governance and deepened the progressive ethos of our party,” Uzodinma added.
The governors pledged their continued support and sought Buhari’s guidance as they work to strengthen the APC and ensure a prosperous Nigeria under President Tinubu’s leadership.
