At least 21 passengers have been rescued after armed bandits launched coordinated attacks on multiple vehicles along major highways in Kogi State, leaving two security personnel dead in the ensuing exchange of fire.
According to security sources, the incident occurred late on Tuesday as gunmen ambushed travellers on the Obajana–Lokoja and Okene–Kabba corridors, firing sporadically and forcing several vehicles to halt. Panic-stricken passengers were reportedly herded into the bush before troops and local security operatives responded.
A swift joint operation led by the Nigerian Army, supported by vigilante units, pursued the attackers and successfully rescued 21 abducted passengers. The operation, however, came at a tragic cost as two security personnel lost their lives during the confrontation.
Residents in the affected areas said the assault caused heavy gridlock and widespread fear, with many travellers taking alternative routes to avoid the violence. Security forces have since intensified patrols across flashpoint locations, while a manhunt for the fleeing bandits is under way.
Kogi State, a strategic gateway between the north and south, has seen a resurgence of highway attacks in recent months, prompting renewed calls for stronger surveillance and rapid-response mechanisms.
Authorities are yet to release further details on the identities of the rescued victims or the fallen officers, but officials say updates will be provided as operations continue.
