Nollywood Mourns Veteran Actor Taiwo Hassan ‘Ogogo’
Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after a battle with cancer.
Hassan’s death was confirmed on Sunday, 23 August 2026, by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during an emotional live session on Instagram. Several Nigerian media organisations have also reported the development.
The actor’s death comes just days after his family publicly disclosed that he was battling stage-four cancer and appealed for urgent medical assistance.
His daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, had earlier made emotional appeals to hospitals, cancer specialists and other medical professionals to help their father, saying the family was searching for treatment options as his condition deteriorated.
The latest development marks a tragic end to the career of one of the most recognisable figures in Yoruba-language Nollywood.
Born in Ilaro, Ogun State, on 31 October 1959, Taiwo Hassan began his acting career in 1981. Before becoming a full-time actor, he worked as an automobile mechanic and was employed by the Lagos State Water Corporation. He eventually left his government job in 1994 to pursue acting professionally.
Over more than four decades, Hassan built a reputation for his memorable performances in Yoruba films and became widely identified by his screen name, Ogogo.
His death has prompted an outpouring of grief among fans, colleagues and members of the Nigerian entertainment industry, who have continued to pay tribute to his contribution to Nollywood.
The actor’s passing also comes only five days after his family dismissed an earlier social-media report claiming that he had died, describing the report as false at the time.
Further details concerning his funeral arrangements are expected from the family.
Taiwo Hassan ‘Ogogo’ was 66.
