Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has formally filed his defence in the ongoing terrorism trial brought against him by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The development marks a significant turning point in the long-running legal battle that has gripped national attention since Kanu’s re-arrest and extradition to Nigeria in 2021.

Reliable court sources confirmed that Kanu’s legal team submitted the defence documents before the Federal High Court in Abuja ahead of the next adjourned hearing. The defence reportedly challenges key aspects of the prosecution’s evidence, while also raising constitutional issues surrounding his arrest and detention.

Kanu’s lead counsel, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), is expected to argue that the charges against his client are politically motivated and lack credible proof of terrorism-related offences.

The Federal Government, however, insists that the IPOB leader’s activities constitute a threat to national security and unity, maintaining that the case will be pursued to its logical conclusion.

The court is expected to resume hearing soon, with observers predicting heated legal exchanges that could shape the future of one of Nigeria’s most contentious trials in recent years.
